So there I was, in the final gate of the Montana State BMX 2011 Championship and thoughts of the previous two races flash before me. The first race was flawless, I nailed the start and got the proverbial “hole-shot” and kept my lead all the way to finish first. The second race unfolded right before my very eyes. I nailed the gate on the second race too, only a split second too soon. Just when the light went I threw my hips into my grips and mashed the pedal with all of might, only to spin my back tire, almost go over the bars and the gate, and I slipped a pedal. The whole first straight-away, I was trying to get clipped back in and catch up to the other riders. They were way out of reach and I took third.

These results were exciting because it was anyone’s race coming in to the final race and it was far from over. The gate slammed down and out of fear of going over again, I hesitated just a split second before launching down the ramp. Both of my competitors had great starts and lead me down the first straight and in the first corner and double. We kept this tight formation into the second straight and into third straight and the rhythm section. I picked my line and began pumping through the rhythm section in hopes of giving the leader a high-low pass in the final corner and into the final straight to the finish line. This was a great idea, but I was carrying too much speed to drop out of the corner and when the leader caught on to my pass, he blocked the low path out of the bermed corner. I saw an opening on the high side and sprinted with all of my might out of the corner, over the final two doubles and sprint to the finish. I got him by a half a wheel length in the final sprint and won the Championship.

This was the most exciting race of the entire season for me, and to quote one of my competitors, “we have more fun than the kids.” I couldn’t agree more. As for the Mini-Mules, they both did great. The older Mini-Mule qualified in the third round and finished third in the main event. The younger Mini-Mule is more focused on crowd pleasing and grand-standing. Typically he gets his own song on the p.a. for his lap and loves standing up on his strider and pumping through the rhythm section, always a crowd favorite.

One Mule’s Dream

Back in the late 1980’s and the earlier days of my youth, I had a passion and a yearning for bicycle motocross. Back in those days BMX was not something that was main stream or something that just anyone did. I spent a few years pestering my parents for a bike and a constant chauffer service to the local track. They finally gave in to my whining and found a suitable bike that would be good for the track and also the neighborhood. That was the same year that the local track closed. So I missed out on the first round of shiny trophies, countless ribbons and learning a vocabulary that centered on flying around a dirt track.

Fast forward a few years (20 or so) and I find myself with two Mini-mules ages 5 and 3 who love bikes. So it is only natural that we stop by the local track to see about the action and how we can get involved in some of the races. As it turns out, there is a fantastic bunch of people that enjoy putting on races three nights a week and they all love watching and teaching the little racers about the sport and the sportsmanship that goes along with it. The side-bar to this is that most of the dads and moms also get to race; it is truly a family sport. Which, on the outside I am thinking this whole thing is pretty cool. On the inside, I am jumping up and down with excitement that I get to go back and race in a sport that I missed out on in my youth.

So far in our first season both of the Mini-mules and I are racing in the Novice division as beginners. Which doesn’t always mean that you race with others of your same experience, often times we are put in higher classes which is the best so we can learn by pushing ourselves out of our comfort zone. We have all placed in a few races and sometimes not at all. Last week we had the privilege of participating in Super Camp put on by Burlin Harris, father of world champion Bubba Harris, at our local track. He brought a couple of professional riders to our track for three days to teach us everything they could in such a short amount of time. By the end of the camp, all of us were riding at a much higher level and we even got Mom to go to the ladies night of camp to hit the track with the pros. So hopefully next year, Mom will be on the track too.

One of the races that we participated in this year was the state qualifier. Both the older Mini-Mule and I qualified to race in the State Championship. This year the State Championship will be held here in Bozeman at our local track (N. 5th avenue between Tamarack and Peach). Registration is from 9-10 am with racing to follow on Sunday the 28th of August. So come on down and watch one Mule’s dreams come true as he and his boy race for the state title.

Honey Badger Stew
1 whole Honey Badger
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cups water
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 clove garlic, peeled
1 or 2 bay leaves
1 medium onion, sliced
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon paprika
Dash ground allspice or ground cloves
3 large carrots, sliced
3 ribs celery, chopped
2 tablespoons cornstarch

Directions

Brown Honey Badger carcass in hot oil. Add water, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, bay leaves, onion, salt, sugar, pepper, paprika, and allspice. Cover and simmer 1 1/2 hours. Remove bay leaves and garlic clove. Add carrots and celery. Cover and cook 30 to 40 minutes longer. To thicken gravy, remove 2 cups hot liquid. Using a separate bowl, combine 1/4 cup water and cornstarch until smooth. Mix with a little hot liquid and return mixture to pot. Stir and cook until bubbly.

Bozeman Tritons Triathlon July 30-31 2011

If any of you have ever thought of doing a triathlon or are an experienced triathlete the Bozeman Tritons have a race for you.

July 30 and 31st is going to be a memorable triathlon weekend in Bozeman MT.

Saturday is the long course half iron. The only one in the state and not at least one day driving distance away. This race is tough with the bike course up Bridger Canyon and over Battle Ridge only to turn around and climb out of it. The run is just as challenging in the Bridger foothills. How could anyone not love it? So if you have always wanted to try a half sign up and start training today. Plus everybody knows the Mule medals. You might get one that is similar for doing this race!!

Sunday is the sprint distance and kids race. If you have never done a triathlon before please come out and experience it. Great people and a great sport.

Of course the Mule Van will be there providing the race venue with tunes and you can all see Cory Hardy's profile on the drivers side door.

The Tritons are a very dedicated group of people trying to establish a great race weekend. I guarantee this race will be filled with positive energy and memories for all.

We missed you at training night. The video was better. I ditched out early though because my legs are feeling tired.
I am not much of a blogger. I have been thinking all week what I would say. I do not have a photo either. However the website has a photo of me from last year but only i know it is me ( because of the skis). I am attaching it.

A Royal Mule?

The King and Queen of the Ridge is an event that is for everyone. It is cool that everyone will try to achieve something different and everyone is polite and having fun through it all. Some will do a few laps and some will keep on tallying up hikes for 5 hours. I am a person who finds exhausting myself appealing, enjoying a good sufferfest ( a word I learned at our team training nights) so although I am not the queen of the ridge, I had a great day. Great people, great weather, great conditions and I was tired. I must admit I started to greatly slow down on my 17th lap hoping to miss the 2:30 cut-off but nope...it was 2:20....should I call it...no way!....I set out to do as many hikes as I could in 5 hours....and there ya have it, 18 laps. Maybe a duchess or mule royalty?

We are in the final days before the LCCP and we are getting all the details wrapped up and finalized.

For anybody who hasn't had a chance to preride the course this year, the downhill section is still really fun, just a bit bumpier than last year and be careful going over that narrow bridge at the bottom.

A few new things this year are a customm steel Strong Frame from Strong Frames to raffle off. We are also having a kids race. It promises to provide a nice little treat for the kiddos from Elles Belles Bakery and Cafe. We also have Mule medals to hand out to the top podium finishers.

We will again be providing a post race meal. The menu this year includes pulled pork, watermelon, coleslaw, and potato chips all curteousy of the undiscovered chef in Gallatin Valley named Ken Zickovich.

The race is going to be fast and furious and I am hoping for the course record to be broken. So come out to the last few days of summer (we had snow in the mtns yesterday), ride your bike hard, and enjoy the post race festivities.

Can't wait to see you there.

Emule wins Maudlow 160

For a a week or two I have been wanting to get out for a tour.

Europe is not in the cards again this year.

Or even a longer continental trip.

Undaunted I packed for the weekend, destination unknown.

I headed up bridger canyon with about three options.

For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

I was leaning towards meeting up with Cory in White Sulpher Springs.

We were to meet the Red ants Pants girl and then camp out.

Lunch was delicious.

The path of least resistance lead to WSS.

I ended up partying most of the night with new friends....

When I was tired I set up my tent in the back yard,

Made some Mack and Cheese and slept quite well.

Here is a coo gas station in WSS.

Towns without money preserve history out of necesity.

In the morning I headed back towards Ringling.

You can cut straight from Ringling to Springhill on gravel roads.

After realizing that the Ringling bound train was not coming

I headed towards Springhill, 50 miles away through dirt roads.

Here I am in the middle of nowhere.

Strangely I had cell reception here and could post a twitpic.

Julie and I have been looking for a fixer upper.

This looks great.

Rustic detailing, with plenty of natural light.

Avoid the Joneses alltogether.

Forget the streets with no name.

Move to a town with no name.

In Maudlow the rain started coming down

A sign warned "impasable when wet"

At the top of the climb into gallatin valley the rain peaked.

It was windy wet and cold.

I took refuge behind a silo.

After putting on all of my clothes I set out into the rain.

After riding about 20' I realized I had a flat (2nd of the day)

After fixing the flat in the rain and the mud I set out again.

The rain was gone.

Now I just needed to roll 20 miles down to Bozeman.

There were no cars.

North end of the Bridger moutains.

The sun came back and that is Bozeman down there.

This ride gave me plenty of ideas for future rides.

Muleterro - 7, Butte100 - 1

The 4th incarnation of The Butte100 is now in the books. And true-to-form for this event, it was an utter sufferfest. A couple of changes this year made for a particularly brutal race: 1) Race organizers added another 800 ft of climbing to the South Loop, and 2) The entire South Loop was ridden in reverse! (Where: The term "ridden" is used lightly as course changes made many sections completely unridable for most racers.) To add to the misery and better distance this fine race from those "other" hundreds, the race organizers spent the last 10 months in a catch-and-release program to buffer the population of wild mosquitos on course. Their efforts didn't go unnoticed as many racers noted the insects' voracious feeding activity throughout the day.

Eight Mules showed up to race. Erik, Sten, and Rich rode the Hundred; Ben, Colter, Ryan, Somer and mule-elect Jessica rode the Fifty. Also in attendance and sporting his new Team TripleRing kit was Mule-at-Heart and 2-time winner, Bill Martin.

The Hundy start fast. Many of the 80 racers were expecting a neutral roll-out down the treacherous Herman Gulch descent. Nope. Somebody said "GO" and the front-row pack of race favorites were off like a shot in hopes of making that first group which would undoubtedly contain Tinker Juarez and defending champ Clint Muhlfeld. Erik, Sten, and Rich all had great starts that kept them out of trouble and put them at the base of the formidable Nez Pierce climb well ahead of the main field. Somewhere between Aid2 and Aid3, veteran-Mule Sten announced that his "Legs were Shot". At Aid3, Sten opted for shade, cold beverages, and better company than Erik and Rich could provide. Sten gladly took a seat that didn't require pedaling and declared his race over. Erik and Rich pushed on to strong finishes barely 15 minutes apart and somewhere around 20th place. (Only 30 finished!!) Bill also had a great race (unless you ask HIM) and landed in 5th place. Nice work guys!!

The Fifty came with some drama. Of the 120-odd riders, about 30 missed the first turn and then chose poorly when confronted with subsequent options to recover position. All Mules in the fifty fell victim of blindly following, and ended up riding the "Butte 63". (Stubborn Mules? Perhaps.) That said, everybody had a great race and a ton of fun. New-Mule Colter was the top finisher on the team. Ben and Ryan also had good rides despite lack of 50-mile days. Jessica and Somer (aka "Powder Puff" for her liberal use of baby powder as chamois cream) rode the entire race together as to best maintain sanity and safety. Nice work guys and gals!!

And so it ends. Muleterro - 7, Butte100 - 1. We collectively logged about 575 miles, 98,000 ft of climbing, and 97,000 mosquito bites. We'll call it a WIN.

As is typical for a race of this magnitude, our friends at TripleRing Productions have been inundated with online feedback that will help make the 2011 race even better! Of note is a comment from one gentlemen who clearly didn't understand the extend of the effort to transplant wild (as opposed to domestic) mosquitos into the area and thus make this race a truly epic event for the ages:

"Is there something you can do about the mosquito population there? maybe like they do in China - only one baby mosquito p/ mosquito couple. Would you mind looking into that?"

Muleterro's response? "Sure.. TripleRing may decide to look into that. But honestly, you won't even notice any bugs next year -- with all those Wolverines that they plan to release on course."

Sweet. We'll be there.

This past weekend was the annual running of the Bohart Bash. And once again, the GAS/Intrinsik team threw a great race. Four Mules were up for the challenge on a this particularily sunny Saturday: Ben, Erik, Joel, and noteworthy new-Mule Christy. First, Joel saw some action and had a great race with the Cat 3s. Next, Ben Erik and Christy jumped into a deep pool of Cat 2s. Ben had a great start, Erik had a better finish, and Christy battled through her first race to land 2nd in Woman's Masters. Nice work guys!

STage 16 tour de france.
Last october Julie and I road around France and Spain.
Today's stage went over the Col de Aubisque and the Col de Tourmalet.
It has been a blast to watch having riden these passes....

All I can say is if you make this ride it will be a lot more fun to watch the tour.

We were on these roads in october.
The roads were quiet but many of the campgrounds and hotels were closed.

There are many cattle and horses along the hills of these mountains.
They are both food!
ha.

Gasoleo means "diesil" in spanish, this will not work in your stove.
Sans plum means "unleaded" in french, this will work in your stove.
Sans, "without"
Plum, "Lead"
Thus, pluming, since early pluming was lead
Or plum line, refering to the lead weight at the end of the line....

Outside Bozeman is not impressed...
After the photo weather rolled in.
We road down the east side in sleet and cold.
But we could still see the chalk from the tour in July.
All the people in the Pyranees were very helpful.
Along the mediteranian they were not so much.

I guess my point is that it is a great place to tour and even better since it is a great historic Tour de France area.

They rolled on, two teams of five and 4 on their own.

In rapelje the met and rallied ready for the trials these times afford, and slim times they are

As they ran to their steads and each in turn sumized only darkness ahead with hounds of hell

To roll and roll the engines hummed through the night powered by an evil sticky swill

We had come for this, still the darkness stayed

Ok I am tired of the poetry, I thought I would give it a try.

A couple of weeks ago 14 mules went out to Rapelje for the 24 hour race.

It was a great weekend, and the weather cooperated.

Bill took first for solo with Rich and Sten close behind.

Rich and Sten road most of the race together and think they had a great time.

We also had a 5 mule team and a 5 mullet? team.

They both took first in their class.

It was great to have new Mules at the race, they dun us proud!

Of my own personal experience, it was ok...

I was not really too excited for the race during the preceeding week.

After the start of the race everyone took off in front of me and I "let" them go.

I road along, 1 lap, 2 lap, 3lap, drinking a heed bottle everylap.

Every lap my butt and arms hurt worse (full rigid rig)

This was my first ride with my new ghetto tubless system which was great.

I was riding at 20psi right over cactus bushes and had no problems.

The 20psi was helpfull, but not enough.

Every lap I checked Sten and Riches time on their sign in sheets.

After lap seven I had chased to within 10 minutes of them.

After 100 miles and seven straight laps I needed a break.

I asked to be woken up at 2am.

When Alphamule came wake me, I thought of my wet shoes and shorts.

It was quite cold at this time.

After about 30 minutes of racking my brain over the pros and cons of riding more laps.

Sleep sounded like soo much more fun.....

Julie has done a wonderfull write up of here Boise half iron but she will not let me post it. It is on the web somewhere....

Mulie finished 15th out of 126 riders in here group. A great race finish I think. It was a warm windy race with a 2pm start time (my kind of race). It was fun to watch here she looked very strong. This was also her first ride with her new ghetto disk wheel (sounds great). Single track mind Andrew was in town for a 8 mtb race. He caught up with us and spent the weekend with us. He was quite subdued after mechanicaling out after 4 laps.

This weekend is Rapel Jay!

Many mules will be there. We should have 4 solos and two teams of undetermined size. If you have nothing to do this weekend you should come along. We can make room...

So we are doing a 24hr race w/ 2 person teams, I've only done the 8 hrs of labor. I am wondering how this will go. Go easy I am thinking, but after the start every one is flying by so I just can't let them go by. After the first lap rich takes over. He asks me how it went, too fast I reply. After his lap I ask, "how did it go", "too fast", he replies. This is what we say to each other for the next few hours. After that we stop asking. It is funny that the one person you don't talk to for 24hrs is your team mate... We still have not compared notes.

The course is fast, smooth, rocky, technical, punchy climbs, swervy and sweet.

The start of race and the end of the race were great. The middle was terrible, but strangely addictive.

I think all the Mules had a great time, and it was nice that no one ever got stressed even with a few bumps in the trail. Sten broke a derailer, Rich hit some trees and went down hard, Bill cramped so hard he was screaming, and my shamwow cream (bag balm) failed me completely.

Bill and sten were off to great start and went into first place right off. Bill was Bill and Sten did a fantastic job of keeping up.

With the relative speed of the course I settled into a pattern. I would start a lap at what seemed like a good pace and waite for a faster smooth looking rider to pass. Then I would tuck in behind for the next 14 miles. After a few minutes I would begin to critique their pace, "that is perfect hold right there". About midway I would start to ask personal questions and they would beg me to pass. Towards the end we would get pretty freindly and they would start to open up a little.

After a few laps Rich and I were in 5th. This seemed ok since I did not know what to expect. Sometime during the dillerium of the night I was told we were in 2nd. Cool!

After every lap you could just sit, rest your bones, and get the VIP treatment.

The shit was hitting the fan about 3am with Rich reduced to a shivering mass on the ground, me frozen to the core and Bill and Sten confusing when to trade laps. It had started to rain on and off. Then the sun came up and it was game on, race number 2.

Towards the end the third place team was gaining on us. Rich was holding strong but I had began to slip. I only had on speed left (ughh). The 3rd place team kept getting closer and closer. At 11:59 Rich came through and yelled, "I feel great I going again", like a 6 year old. At 12:00 the finishing gun went off and the 3rd place rider came in about 30 seconds later. "Well Rich is racing himself now", I said to I. Bill and Sten finished 2 laps ahead of everyone else.

Well that is about it except riding and pumping through great twisty trails and being in the zone for 12 hours of riding.

After the race we stayed for the awards (red wine?).
Montana riders took the cake.
1 2 3 for the 2 person teams as well as Great divide (i think) Juinors taking first in the 4 rider class. They were some of riders i drafted (Ha).

Thanks to Bob @ tripple ring for keeping us supplied with hammer products and giving Bill such great support.

Thanks to Colin at the round house for fixing my 2 cut spokes, jacked bottom bracket and bum front bearings 2 days before the race.

And Also Jason at Miller Recreational for the 1,000$ we have used to get the Muletrain back on the road

Unraveled and Scratch Graveled!

Muleterro persons Rich, Marta, Emule, Ben and Cory all attended the "Unravel the Scratchgravel" and gave it their all. The first mountain bike race of the year is always the toughest and its downhill from there. Marta kicked some serious mule hiney by taking 1st in the womens beginner class (also being the first cross country race of her Muleterro career). Awesome! Hee haw hee haw! The rest is training. The course was brutal; sun beating down and a complete lack of air movements. Aggressive logging activities have commenced since last year adding to the high heat venue. Regardless, beautiful spring day for muledriver type activities.

All mules reported having a blast. The rolling CX course is a favorite, and race well organised.

Thanks to Colin and the Roundhouse for helping Captain Cory and Emule with last minute repairs.

We are so excited for the next race.

Sten and DollarBill spent the weekend camping and riding at pipestone. Bill reports riding 111 miles on sunday, that is quite ride on dirt!

Next stop, Round and Round in Spokane.

We we're stoked to ride STOKR this weekend. Libby is Rich's old stomping grounds. 140 miles in two days. Freezing rain. Good food and drink.

I had not been to this area before so it was quite nice to see it. It is beautiful country. The first day was freezing cold with constant rain. Very few people finished all 100 miles. The second day was only 40 miles but the weather was much better. We were allowed to cross the top of the damn dam (pretty coo).

I will definately consider a longer tour in this area some day.....

Next weekend is the scratch gravel race in Helena. I think we should have a full contingent of Mules.....

Team Muleterro would like to invite you to a get together at 512 E. Fridley in Bozeman, MT. We will have food, beverages, and entertainment in the form of Erik riding his new mini-bike through a custom trials course. This exhibition will be occurring May 1, 2010 from 3:00-later.

Attack of the Methane powered Clones

The RMR was a great race day. Thanks to all who put it on.

It was a bummer not to have the mule van there to add some tunes but soon it will be road worthy again.

The morning of the race we were greeted buy a terrible sun filled sky and calm winds. There was some talk of postponing the race to wait for sleet and gail force winds, but finally the race started on time.

It was nice to see everyone I had not seen in a while while sigining in. Everyone was in great spirits....

As the race started I tried to get out in the wind a bit to warm up for the hill that was coming. I had mentioned in an earlier post that I might make a break for it, but as we approched the first big hill I thought it would be more fun to try to catch up from behind. As we hit the first hill I slowed down to let everyone pass, this way I could spend the day chasing. After the first hill is a fast dirt descent. I passed four or so riders on the side of the road with flats. My 28mm touring tires were doing there job. Soon after I joined up with Dakterdave. We road for some time before another methane powered orange deamon came up from behind (GAS David). At this time we could still see the lead group ahead. GasDavid made some strong pulls for the rest of the race. He really really wanted to get back to the front after flating. As we topped the second dirt climb I started to fall off Dave and David (what the hell), but on the steep downhill my fat tires worked great and I powered back up to them. As we made the second lap together Daktordave had some mechanical and fell off. Two miles later GasDave asked, "whered he go?" funny..
On the way back to the finish we caught Dillon and Jessie from GAS. Wait up wait up! The orange deamons let me ride with them the rest of the way in. On the final climb I figured I would take me own pace, climb sitting, and see what happened. It did not work so well, but at the top they were not too far ahead and I started sprinting, to no avail.

It was a great day. It was nice to see everyone and get out for a great ride. I only wish the roads were worse. I have been having alot of fun sliding around on mud lately.

P.s.
The next day I went out for three hours in the twilite wind to finish my hours before a rest week. The following day I felt floaty and funny. By Evening I was couchbound with fever. Game over.... Ughh

P.s.s. after 36 hours on the couch I awoke feeling great, 1st place, I win, you stupid virsus!

All week long I had been watching the weather. What to wear from the pool to the bike in freezing weather? I decided my Muleterro skinsuit might work. However, Saturday was beautiful. It was sunny and by the noon heat warm enough to get away with a swimsuit. I got there early to watch Mary Suit and Claire Gilam race. This was their first triathlon and it was exciting to see them out there. We had done a little training together and I had given some advice on transitioning. Good job girls!!! I hope you are hooked. I have been sick and was on the fence about actually racing, but the energy of the Grizzly is so strong and positive once I got there I knew I had to race. Now to the race.

I had a little high school reunion with Josh Kuntz in my lane in the pool and then we were off. Swim felt good. Out of the water pretty fast for me. I had not pushed the right button on my watch when I started so I didn't have any idea what my time was the whole race, which is unfortunate when you have a goal time. The transition was a little slower than I hoped. I think I even put my shorts on backwards. Next year it will just be a swimsuit. The bike was good. Small headwind on the way out. Fast on the way back. I focused on pushing equally the whole way and not taking it easy with the tailwind. T2 was soo fun. Out of my shoes before the dismount and a running dismount off the bike. Run felt good. Very good. I haven't felt that great running in ages, which was starting to worry me. Even the hill wasn't that bad. Overall I was 14th with a 2nd in my age group.

Spent the rest of the afternoon watching all of the Tritons race and the elite heats go. It was fun to see Linsey Corbin and some of the fast guys Matt Seeley, Ben Hoffman, and Aubrey Curtis. Thank you so much Tritons. Tony Thatcher for pushing me in the pool. We are going to get faster!!!! Laurie Thatcher for the private coaching on the Computrainer. Art Thompson for inspiration. Mary, Claire, and Krista thanks for the motivation to keep going even though the sun had gone down a long time ago. Thanks Erik for never letting me quit.

Can't wait for next year. I am racing in the elite heat and please hold me to it.

First off, happy birthday to Bill Martin, and great job winning the Devil's Slide MTB race last weekend!

Grettings from sunny/snowy/warm/cold Bozeman.
I, Emule being of sound mind and body, made it out for two rides this weekend.
Woke up saturday to 3 inches of slush and snowy grey sky's.
My plan for the weekend was 7 hours of riding, so after stalling a bit and wavering I went out on the fixed gear with road tires.
I road the town trails for about two hours pushing a cadence of about 10 through slush.
The sun came out for a while and I stopped by Sprouts and she joined me for another two hours on roads.
Then it snowed some more.
It is funny, no matter how bad it looks outside, if you just get out the door, it is always a good ride.
Riding the road tires in snow really keeps your mind off the heartrate monitor.

Sunday I road out to bear trap along the madison river. It took 2.5 hours with a big head wind the whole way, plus my fried legs from pushing through snow on saturday, but the sun was out and the sky was beautiful.

This coming weekend Dollar Bill will be heading to the Barking Spider MTB race.
Julie will be doing the Grizzly triathlon on saturday.
Sunday Julie and I will be heading to the Rocky Mountain Roo bay.
Hopefully we will be joined by Sprout, Jenny, Rich and Sten....

Also, I have quite a bit of hard training this week for 24hr races, so if I fly off the front at the Roo Bay just let me go....
I will have nothing in the tank.

Mulie and Emule (me) will be heading up to polson for the SPEEDWAGON CLASSIC. We will be leaving bozeman at 3 on friday. Are there any stokers interested? This race was a blast last year. The rough gravel, the soft gravel, the dirt, the chilli.... I need to remember hot sauce.

Bill Martin is off to Idaho for a mountain bike race. It should be a great year for Bill after getting 6th at the 24 hr solo worlds last summer.

The Muleterro Tax Day Party is in the works for mid april. Planning is comming along well. We have no firm date, location, or costume them. We are however working on a muleterro branded beer from a local brewery!

Mulie has been training hard for a half iron man. I think she will do quite well (she won the half iron in Three Forks last summer).

I (Emule) am starting my first season with a training program! I have even stepped into the 90's with a heart rate monitor, and am drinking one less beer a day. That last part will should have everyone worried.

Team Muleterro is planning on holding a little get together sometime in mid April. The primary function of this event is to round up all the people interested in joining the Team and reconnect with old members. We will have some delicious beverages and food, a slide show, and maybe a movie!!!

Run to the Pub

Hello all you runners out there. Team Muleterro has a team for this years Run to the Pub on March 13th. Anybody interested in being part of the team and seeing what Muleterro is all about is welcome to join. When you register online just say that you want to be part of the team. The day of the race look for the Mule jersey and maybe some funky socks and headbands. The race is a lot of fun and ends with a free beer at Pub 317. There is a drawing for a trip to Dublin to run the Dublin Marathon. Julie won the trip last year and reports that the marathon is excellent. Can't wait to meet everybody.

Julie's new trainer......

Spring rebuild, "Alluminum is real", light.

This last weekend we went to (chuck) Norris Hot springs for a soak.
Emule, Sten, Jenny, Rich, Sprout, and Sean.
We were planning on taking the mule van but the battery was dead from playing music too loud.
Sean was a MSU cycler some years ago. He was visiting from somewhere east of here.

Sprout bonked, Rich stayed in zone 2, Jenny took photos, Sean wanted to continue to ennis hill, sten got hungry.....

Also, I was talking to John Curry the other day, and it got me to thinking.
If all montana racers train 1/2 as much as they did last year,

then all race results should remain unchanged at montana races this year.

What have the Mules been up to lately? Part 2

Marta, Julie, Jenny, Sprout, and Erik headed over to Homestake Lodge a couple of weeks ago to get in some skate skiing. Homestake Lodge has over 40km of trails. Many of which you can take your dog on!!! I just love the terrain of the place. You ski from thick pine forests into large meadows surrounded by aspens and cruise down big hills into steep rocky canyons.

Cory extended his trip in Thailand for another month and a half. He is learning how to sew. If you are interested you should put your clothing order in now.

Erik is finishing his Dads house. The flooring was done yesterday!! He is also riding outside like a madman. Watch out cyclocrossers technically he is going to be able to out ride most of you!!! A slave driver he took Julie on a long ride though Bozemans trails teaching her all of his new tricks. Pictures soon.

Bill announced that Rapelje is the weekend of June 26th this year. One week later than the usual date. Sad, because CDA Ironman is also that weekend.

Some of the Mules will be participating in Make Tracks for Trails. A fundraiser and ski day for the Gallatin Valley Land Trust. It is at Bohart on February 27th. Anybody who is interested in being on a team to win the golden ski award should let us know.

Cory decided he needed a break and flew halfway across the world to Thailand for an extended vacation of massages (hopefully not too many happy endings). We haven’t really heard from him, so we are hoping he isn’t in jail. But that could only happen if he got really drunk. Who Cory??!!

Erik (Emule) has been busy designing and building a house for his dad.

Ben and Dana have been doing a lot of skiing and preparing for a new arrival. We will have a full blooded junior mule soon.

Bill? Well you probably all follow his blog anyway, but he has been up to some big Missoula adventures.

Julie is getting ready for some half-ironman’s this summer and preparing for a full next. She has been busy searching for training fuel recipes since bars at the store our breaking the bank account. Here is what she found.

½ cup of chopped dates-don’t buy them chopped, coarsely chop them yourself.
½ cup of dried cranberries
½ cup of walnuts

Put the dates and cranberries into a food processor until they form a big ball
Put the mixture in a separate bowl
Put the nuts into a food processor until they are finely chopped
Push the nuts into the ball of dates and cranberries until they are all in and mixed in well
Form to whatever shape you like and eat!!!

This recipe can be modified in so many ways. Add some peanut butter, use dried apricots instead of cranberries, and use pecans instead of walnuts. Be creative. Yum Yum!!
She can attest to this recipe. 4 hours on skate skis and I stayed fueled!!!

Rich is happily spinning in his basement to century spinerval DVDs and when he isn’t doing that attempting to take his dogs out on skate skis. I guess that isn’t going very well.

Marta is happily embracing skate skiing. Way to go Marta. You will be dragging us up Bozeman Creek soon.

Jenny is skiing hundreds of miles every week (she doesn’t have a job) and wondering why she looks like a toothpick.

Sprout- ever the endurance athlete has been running and running and running. She is planning on a 100 miler this summer. Way to go Sprout.

What have the Mules in store for next season?? Leverich Canyon Crank Up is on the calendar and so is Mule Cross. Other than that I am sure we will be participating in 24 hours of Rapelje, The Headwaters relay, and definitely numerous other events.

Erik Horn (Emule) represented Team Muleterro at the U.S Grand Prix cyclocross races in Portland. Coming from subzero temperatures we were hoping for some warmer weather. That didn’t exactly happen. Erik’s races started at 8:00am sharp. We were up before 6. Saturday morning was foggy and wet. The course was pretty frozen to start but quickly became a mud fest. Erik didn’t preregister so he was called up in the back of a pack of 72 people. The whistle was blown and Erik was off. He looked really good going over the barriers and slowly throughout the short three laps worked his way up to 9th place. Way to go Erik!!!

Sunday the weather was a bit different, biting cold and windy making the course hard and dry. The course had also been changed a little to include some more technical sections on the motocross track. Perfect for Mr. Horn!!! Again because of not pre-registering Erik started out in the back of the pack. They were off. Erik moved his way all the way up to 6th place (out of 72) in one lap!!! Erik’s amazing bike handling skills allowed him to pass almost everybody. He held on for the rest of the race in this position and finished day two in 6th. What a great race to finish the season.

The weekend was a blast. We were at the races all day long watching Bozeman people race. Bill Cochran, Brian and Amy Frykman, Lisa and John Curry, Patricia Dowd, Alan Adams, and Julie Zickovich all participated. They each have their own stories to tell so keep lookout for their blogs. Also, Nationals is this weekend with a huge Montana contingent. I can’t wait to see what happens!!!! O/O.

MooseCross 2009

This past weekend, The MuleTrain attended MooseCross 2009 in Victor, ID. Present were AlphaMule Cory, Sten, Rich, Sprout, and Jenny.

The mission was simple. Act like we were there to race and party -- but in reality scout for any ideas that we can carry forth to MuleCross! In MooseCross we found a highly-organized cyclocross festival run by a bunch of great people and built around a very cool 'cross track in "downtown" Victor. In short, they smashed it! The bar has been set.

The Women's race on Saturday saw the return of Jenny and even Sprout's CycloCross debut in over 5 years! Sten followed with an impressive performance in a stacked Masters field that landed him 2nd step on the podium. And finally, Rich and Cory battled-it-out with 32 racers in the crowded CAT 4/5 group. Rich settled into 5th while Cory worked on his mule mating-call to effectively herd racers in front of him.

Sunday saw less action. On the women's side Sprout rested while Jenny showed up just in time to watch the race. Sten was sidelined with a mechanical and also opted to spectate. However, Rich and Cory dove back into shark-infested waters and landed in 4th and 6th respectively.

Here are some memorable race moments by different teammates

Erik:
The headwaters relay was a blast. Three days of "racing", early mornings and beautifull scenery. Everyone did a great job making up for my speed walking especially Ben Justin and Josh. On the second morning we were just toping the gravelly range when the sun came up. That was quite beautiful. It was great to have Steph with us. She ran quite strong. Lincoln showed up the first night on his KLR and stayed with us till the finish. His knowledge of the backroads turned out to be essential on the last day. Justin was a bulldog keeping us on course the last day also. The best section of course was new to the race this year. I ran this section along with Josh as my safety buddy (bear allert). We ran down hill for two miles at break neck speed on a cow path past tight meadows of wild flowers. After the previous two days of training I was starting to feel pretty good. Then sudenly we came upon an emerald blue lake. We ran around the lake on a trail of flowers. The whole time Josh wash giving me encouragment. As we reached the far side of the lake the trail started heading up and my legs started to feel strangely heavy. When we reached the exchange point there were no mules in sight. I stoped to catch my breath as Josh ran down the road towards the next exchange point.

Day 2 waiting at exchange 2. All the runners kept coming in. Even the ones that started 30 minutes behind. We are all wondering where is Erik? Julie to Steph "I bet they were late" and Steph to Julie "they were late". Cory and Erik. Yep you bet they were late!
Day 2 and 3 with Josh, Steph, Cory, and Sprout in the van and Ben running. So much fun! Blasting Master of Puppets as Ben flew by especially on top of the Gravellys.
Day 3. Running through the protected trumpeter swan breeding ground and stopping to fill my bottle from a huge spring that fed all of the ponds. Amazing!!!

Headwater Half Iron- Race Report

The Headwaters Half Iron was a really great event at a great venue. Hats off to Aubrey Curtis and Tony from Fleet Feet in Bozeman for putting on the first half iron in Montana. With a little promotion this race has the potential to become really popular. It could really put the little town of Three Forks on the map and maybe like 24 hours of Rapelje contribute to its economy. I heard something about a great breakfast at the hotel??? I have to admit I wasn't so sure about swimming in the pond, but it was really clean and clear. The bike was more challenging than I had anticipated with a pretty much false flat and a few really big grinds all the way to the turn around. And the run was hot, hot, hot. The straight 2.5 mile pavement section was definite suffering, but also the most gratifying because that is what all the training is all about.

I have read a few race reports on the mens race, but I haven't read anything about the womens so I am going to report on how it all went down. From my perspective anyway.

This was my A race and I had trained hard to peak for it. However, I got sick a week before the race and wasn't able to taper properly. Actually I was on the fence about racing all the way until Friday before. So I wasn't sure how I would feel. Did my rest go to fighting infection or rebuilding muscles? You all know the thoughts that go through your mind.

So race day. Up early with an early 730am race start. The transition was pretty casual with only 35 people. I think Aubrey knew everybody by name. It was nice with only a few racks you didn't have to get there to early to ensure a good transition location. They were all good.

Ok to the race. We were off on the swim. Two laps counterclockwise around the pond. I came out right next to Art Thompsen. My time was slower than my goal, but thats okay I was pretty sure I couldn't beat that goal.

At the transition I glanced around and saw the one bike I was worried about gone. Crap, that lady is ahead of me already. Threw on my new pink aero helmet got my food and ran out of the transition area (with my bike of course).

Erik was directing traffic at the first turn and told me she had 5 minutes on me. I tried to settle into the bike at a fast pace but something I could maintain. I had 56miles to get my 5 minutes back. I was almost to the turn around when I saw her. Sweet, I was closing in. Going back was fast and fun. Over the speed limit in Logan. I remembered reading Mel's (from Team Delphine) first race report when she did that and even laughed a little. I could never see my competitor though and at the end of the bike kind of conceded to 2nd. I am not a fast runner and that would be a hard catch. I had already made two goals though. Possibly a fastest bike split and higher than average speed than I needed for my overall goal time. Some cushion from that damn swim.

I transitioned and was out on the first 2.5 mile straighaway. The other girls I was assuming were still pretty far behind me. Then I could see her. Far away, but I could see her. I thought, maybe I can catch her. At the first aid station she was closer and she kept getting closer. As we ran through downtown Three Forks I passed her. She was a strong strong triathlete and I thank her so much for being my rabbit. Good luck in your racing!! The next 7 miles I had to contain myself and focus on finishing. A lot can happen in 7 miles especially in that heat. At the finish my time was 5:17:30. 1st female and I think 5th overall. My strong competitor came in just behind me and Becky Hochstein from the Bozeman Tritons finished 3rd.
Other Bozeman women that competed were Brenna Boyd, Liz Layne, and Mariska MacKenzie. They all finished really strong. Good job to all of you.

Winning this race was just icing on the cake. If I went to a big 70.3 trademark race I wouldn't even place in an age group category. The important thing for me in this race was that I set goals and was able to meet them and then some. I followed a training plan that allowed me to actually "peak" for this race and accomplish my goals. But, I think the mind is really powerful and if you can really believe something you can achieve it. Maybe the next race I can get under 5 hours??!!

Mulie @ Spring Meadow Triathlon

Julie and I camped just outside of Helena the night before and arrived at the race with plenty of time to get ready. This olympic length race was to be a trainer for Julies Half Ironman in few weeks. Julie did quite well finishing 5th overall in womens and third in her age group!

24 (uhmm 8) hours of Rapelje

Team Muleterro travelled to Rapleje over the summer solstice to race at 24 hours of Rapelje. Bill Martin, Sten, Rich, and Andrew Genco all raced solo. We also had two teams of 5. Mules with GAS and the Grizzly Mules. After getting completely rained out about 8 hours into the race Bill Martin won the solo race with 7 laps. Andrew Genco won the solo single speed class. And the Grizzly Mules won the 5-man team.

The winning was good but definitely not what the race was all about for most people attending. This article from the Great Falls Tribune (with picture of Mule- Ben Elias) sums up why this race is so great.
